Q & A with Mr. America, IPE World Champ, PNBA Olympia, OCB Pro Champ & On Repeat Sports Brand Ambassador: Jay Brew
ORS: When and why did you start lifting? When do you feel like you became a serious lifter?
Jay: In 2008, I started lifting in the summer months in my friend’s basement, strength training for college wrestling and really enjoyed learning and seeing quick results. From that moment, I knew I wanted to continue getting stronger and possibly give bodybuilding a try after a few solid years of training after my college wrestling career was over. First competition at age 27.
ORS: What time of day do you train and why?
Jay: Majority of the time it's 3pm after my work day is over. I also prefer this time because it allows me to get three full meals in before I train. I’m alert and ready and don’t have to worry about taking too much pre-workout. Weekends I tend to lift mid-morning after one meal.
ORS: What do you listen to on repeat at the gym to get you into beast mode?
Jay: I enjoy listening to both new rock and old school rock. Anything that has a good beat and hits fairly hard.
ORS: Do you have a favorite exercise?
Jay: I enjoy deadlifting. I think it's an awesome exercise that hits the whole posterior chain the best. Instant results!
ORS: What is your main fitness goal for the coming year?
Jay: To continue to be healthy the rest of the year. Been dealing with a lot of minor issues. Stay clear of any problems and continue to strive to keep growing my physique.
ORS: Do you write down your goals?
Jay: I keep them in mind. I’ve accomplished some huge goals for myself already that I’ve written down. Now I’m continuing to challenge myself in the gym hitting some numbers and proper execution. My ultimate goal now is to bring a better physique to the stage the next time I compete. Grow my weaknesses.
ORS: What has led to the biggest improvements in your training or physique?
Jay: I'd say hitting your compound movements for years and years and hitting all rep ranges. Give it time, effort, learn to eat well, and you will grow muscle.
ORS: Who inspires you in the gym? Do you have a hero?
Jay: People in general inspire me in the gym. If they are working hard, I can see that effort. The golden era of bodybuilding had some phenomenal physiques. The whole Core Nutritionals crew/teammates work extremely hard and they are always striving for more. “Living the Crush-It Lifestyle”
ORS: What is most overlooked when it comes to getting the results you want in the gym?
Jay: Nutrition and Intensity. Feed your body with premium fuel and have high intensity in the gym. Demand more for yourself.
ORS: What advice would you give someone new to the gym?
Jay: As a natural athlete it's going to take time and effort. Put a decade in of hard work and you definitely see some huge results. Can’t rush the process. Focus on heavy compound movements and build that foundation. Work on solid technique and a full range of motion. Never give up, train smart, and take care of your body.
